Fifty people, four distribution centres, one of the world’s biggest fast-food chains brought to a standstill.

On 22 May 2021, more than 50 people blockaded all four of McDonald’s UK distribution centres — shutting the company’s supply chain down for over 24 hours and forcing multiple store closures across the country.
It was the first time the UK arm of one of the world’s largest meat buyers had been stopped nationwide by citizens demanding a plant-based transition.
Keeping the pressure on
The blockades were followed by further action at the Scunthorpe facility and an occupation of McDonald’s London flagship store — keeping the question in the headlines: why is a company this size still built on industrial animal farming?
Why it mattered
The campaign forced a national conversation about plant-based futures out of activist circles and into the mainstream press — and proved that calm, coordinated, nonviolent action could reach even the biggest supply chains in the country.
